Jetwing Surf, a hotel we use in Arugam Bay

Jetwing Surf

Jetwing Surf takes its inspiration from the coast, and its main building is shaped like a conch shell. It stands at Coconut Point in Pottuvil, on eight acres of land planted with coconut palms and other trees. The design is eco friendly and sustainable.

Why stay here

It suits travellers who want to stay close to the surf in a place that takes sustainability seriously.

Planning your stay

Arugam Bay is on the east coast, a long drive from Colombo, so many travellers combine it with Ella or Yala. The best surf and the driest weather on this coast come from about April to October, while from November the town is much quieter. Arugam Bay is also a good base for wildlife trips to Kumana and Lahugala, where elephants gather around the tanks in the dry season.

Things to do nearby

Surf at Arugam Bay, Whiskey Point or Peanut Farm, take a Pottuvil lagoon safari, or visit Lahugala.

Accommodation

Accommodation is in cabanas built from natural materials such as bamboo, dried iluk grass, coconut palm and coir. They have no air conditioning; instead the roofs of iluk and woven coconut palm keep them cool. Each cabana has an outdoor bathroom with a shower made from coconut husks and a tap shaped like a conch shell.

How to Get There

Jetwing Surf is on the coast just north of Pottuvil, a short drive from the Arugam Bay point. From Bandaranaike International Airport it is about 320 km by road, about 7 and a half hours, travelling either through the hill country or via the Southern Expressway and Monaragala, both long but scenic drives.

Coming from central Colombo instead, allow 7 hours 15 minutes for roughly 305 km.

To keep arrival simple, ask us for a private transfer with a chauffeur who meets you outside arrivals. You can keep the car for touring afterwards. Road times are a guide only and can vary with traffic and weather.
