The Arugam Bay area, where our hotel picks are based

Hotels in Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka's best-known surf town, a long way from anywhere: about seven hours by road from Colombo. It is a small village strung along one road, with the main point break at its southern end. Our hotels range from simple to quietly luxurious.

In the village

Hideaway Resort has been running since 1979, with 14 rooms set in six acres of gardens; it is a long-time favourite. Arugambay Roccos is a contemporary hotel of 22 white cubes on the sand. The Blue Wave Hotel is a mid-range option close to the beach and the surf.

North of the bay

Jetwing Surf is a set of cabanas inspired by the shape of a conch shell, built with sustainability in mind. Kottukal Beach House by Jetwing is a four-bedroom house on a coconut estate, ideal for a family or a group.

When to come

The surf season runs from about April to October, with the peak in June to August. Outside this window, many places close or slow down. Surfing is the main draw, but you can also take a Pottuvil lagoon safari, visit Kumana National Park, or try yoga.
