Hotels and places to stay around Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka

Hotels in Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya sits at about 1,900 metres, and nights are cold, so check that your room has heating or plenty of blankets. The town was a British hill station, and several hotels still feel like it. Our list splits into the colonial hotels in town, modern hotels nearby, and stays out in the tea.

Hotels in Nuwara Eliya

Colonial classics

The Grand Hotel, built in 1891, sits on manicured lawns near the town centre and is the best-known name in Nuwara Eliya. The Hill Club, an old gentlemen's club with 39 rooms, has kept much of its old club atmosphere.

Getting here

The hill-country train from Kandy to Nanu Oya has been out of service since Cyclone Ditwah in November 2025, so arrive by road: about three and a half hours from Kandy. Trains from Nanu Oya on to Ella are running again. In town, walk around Lake Gregory, visit a tea factory, or go to Horton Plains at dawn.
