Where to stay in Kumana: a view of the area

Hotels in Kumana

Kumana National Park, on the south-east coast, is one of the best birdwatching parks in Sri Lanka, with large nesting colonies at the Kumana Villu. It also has elephants and leopards, and far fewer visitors than Yala next door. We do not list hotels at Kumana itself.

Where to stay

Most people stay in Arugam Bay, about an hour from the Okanda entrance, and leave very early for a morning drive. It combines well with a surf trip.

When to go

April to July is the peak nesting season for water birds. The park is generally open all year but can close at short notice in the north-east monsoon, roughly November to January, when tracks flood. Check before you travel.

Safari tips

  • Book a jeep with a licensed driver; your hotel can arrange it.
  • Bring a hat, sunscreen, water and binoculars.
  • Keep noise down, never feed animals, and ask the driver not to crowd them.
