Planning your stay
Galle is about two hours from Colombo on the Southern Expressway. Inside the fort everything is within walking distance, and the beaches of Unawatuna and Mirissa are a short drive away. The south coast is driest from about November to April. Galle Fort is best explored on foot in the early morning or late afternoon, when it is cooler; the ramparts are a favourite place to watch the sunset.

How to Get There
The Heritage Galle Fort sits inside Galle Fort. The airport at Katunayake is around 150 km away, about 2 and a half hours by car, travelling via the Southern Expressway, which ends a few kilometres from the town.
Coming from central Colombo instead, allow 2 hours for roughly 120 km.
The coastal railway from Colombo Fort also runs along this shore, a slower but scenic alternative if you travel light.
