Overview

Bomburu Ella is a waterfall in the hills beyond Welimada, made up of many small streams that pour side by side over a wide rock face. Local sources often call it the widest waterfall in Sri Lanka. It sits in a remote, green area of farmland and forest, far from busy roads.

What you see

Rather than one tall plunge, Bomburu Ella is a broad curtain of separate cascades. After rain it is at its fullest. Part of the water is diverted for a small hydropower scheme and for farming, so flow varies.

The walk

The final stretch is on foot along narrow paths. Depending on where you leave the vehicle, it can take from about half an hour to a couple of hours each way. The path can be slippery and steep in places.

How long it takes

Allow half a day from Nuwara Eliya including the drive, the walk and a picnic.

When to go

The falls are most impressive during and just after the rainy months, but paths are then muddier. Start in the morning; mist and showers often build in the afternoon.

Getting there

From Nuwara Eliya, drive to Welimada, then continue on smaller roads towards the Uva-Paranagama side. The final approach is about 15 km from Welimada. A local driver who knows the route is the easiest option.

Practical tips

  • Wear shoes with good grip and bring rain gear.
  • Carry water and snacks; there are few shops nearby.
  • Stay out of the water at the top of any drop.
  • Take your rubbish with you.
