Overview
Amangalla is a luxury hotel in a 17th-century building on Church Street, inside Galle Fort. For years it was the New Oriental Hotel, and it is one of the best-known colonial buildings in the fort. Afternoon tea here is a classic way to spend an hour or two out of the heat.
What to expect
Tea is served on the verandah and in the public rooms, with views over the street and the fort. Expect a selection of Ceylon teas, including Sri Lankan white tea, with finger sandwiches, scones with cream and jam, cakes and small pastries. The mood is calm and unhurried.
Times and booking
As of 2026, afternoon tea is served daily from about 3pm to 5pm. It is popular in high season, so book a table in advance. Prices change, so check with the hotel when you book.
How long it takes
Around one to two hours.
When to go
It works well after a morning or early afternoon of sightseeing, when the fort is hot. The south coast season is about November to April, but tea is served year round.
Getting there
Amangalla is at 10 Church Street, near the main gate and the Dutch Reformed Church, a short walk from anywhere in the fort.
Practical tips
- Smart casual clothes are best.
- Pair it with a sunset walk on the ramparts.
