Kalu's Hideaway sits in five acres of gardens on the edge of a quiet dry-zone village near the Udawalawe reservoir, about ten minutes from the gates of Udawalawe National Park. It is owned by the former Sri Lankan cricketer Romesh Kaluwitharana, who turned hotelier after retiring from the game, and cricket touches turn up around the property.

Why stay here
It is a calm, green base for safaris. Udawalawe is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see wild elephants, often in large herds and all year round, and the short drive to the park gate makes it easy to go out early in the morning and again in the late afternoon, with time by the pool in the heat of the day.
Getting there
Udawalawe is about four hours from Colombo by road, and a natural stop between the hill country and the south coast.
There are Standard Rooms and Deluxe Rooms, some looking over the pool, a Suite with a separate living area, and Chalets for families and small groups. All are air-conditioned, and the gardens and surrounding forest keep the nights quiet.
Standard Room
The first category at Kalu's Hideaway is a 20 sqm room with a king size bed and garden views. It has air conditioning, and interconnecting rooms are available.
