Highlights
- A fairly easy hike that suits most ages
- A viewpoint with sweeping views over the valleys
- The trail runs through forest off the usual routes
Overview
Mini World's End is a viewpoint at the edge of an escarpment in the Knuckles mountain range, reached from Deanston, near the Knuckles conservation centre. It is called "mini" to set it apart from the much larger World's End at Horton Plains. Do not confuse it with the "Mini World's End" on the Horton Plains trail, or the cliff at Pitawala Pathana, which is also sometimes given the name.
The trail
The walk to the viewpoint is short, roughly 1 km each way. From the conservation centre, the path passes a small lake known as Deanston lake, crosses a little bridge and follows the bank before entering a patch of forest. It then leads out to the cliff edge. The track is mostly gentle but can be muddy.
What you see
On a clear day, the drop opens up a wide view over valleys, ridges and villages below, with the peaks of the Knuckles around you. Mist often moves through quickly, so the view changes by the minute. Birds and butterflies are common in the forest.
How long it takes
About one to two hours, including time at the viewpoint.
When to go
Early morning, before clouds build. January to April is usually the driest period in the Knuckles.
Getting there
Deanston is on the eastern side of the range, reached via Hunnasgiriya and the road to Corbet's Gap. Allow around 1.5 to 2 hours from Kandy. Forest Department entry fees apply; check locally.
Practical tips
- Leeches are common after rain; wear leech socks.
- Keep well back from the cliff edge; there are no railings.
