Highlights
- A long stretch of sand on the south coast
- Snorkelling, surfing and diving nearby
- Close to Unawatuna, Galle and Hikkaduwa
Overview
Koggala beach is a long stretch of sand on the south coast, between Galle and Weligama. It is far less developed than Unawatuna or Mirissa, so it suits travellers who want space, long walks and a slower pace.
What you see and do
The beach is wide and open, backed by palms and a few hotels. Parts of it are protected by reef, which can calm the water close to shore. Stilt fishermen are a common sight along this coast, perched on poles in the shallows, especially early morning and late afternoon; read more on our page about the stilt fishermen. Some fishermen now pose for photos and ask for a tip.
Snorkelling is possible on calm days where reef is close to shore, and surf spots lie a short drive east.
When to go
The season on the south coast runs from about November to April, with calmer seas and more sun. From May to September the sea is often rough, with strong currents.
How long it takes
As long as you like. A half day is a good start.
Getting there
Koggala is about 20 minutes east of Galle along the coast road, and the coastal railway has a station here.
Practical tips
- Swim only where locals or your hotel say it is safe; there are few lifeguards.
- Bring shade; much of the beach has none.
- Ask before photographing fishermen.
