Things to do nearby

Explore the ancient city: the Vatadage and the Quadrangle, the Gal Vihara and the Parakrama Samudra. Our Polonnaruwa day tour covers the highlights. For wildlife, elephant safaris run in Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks.

Good to know

The ruins are spread out, so many visitors explore them by bicycle or tuk-tuk; start early, as the site gets very hot by midday. The large elephant gathering at Minneriya is usually seen in the dry season, roughly July to October. The drive from the airport takes about 4 hours 15 minutes.
