Planning your stay
Kandy is about three hours by road from Colombo, or a scenic train ride. The city sits around a lake, and the Temple of the Tooth is busiest at the evening puja. During the Esala Perahera, usually in July or August, rooms book up early. Dress modestly for the Temple of the Tooth, covering shoulders and knees, and leave shoes at the entrance. Evenings in Kandy are cooler than on the coast.

How to Get There
The Golden Crown Hotel is on a hillside above the Mahaweli river, a short drive from Kandy. From Bandaranaike International Airport it is about 115 km by road, about 3 hours 15 minutes, travelling on the Central Expressway and then the Kandy road through Kegalle.
If you start in Colombo, it is around 120 km, about 3 hours 15 minutes on the road.
As of October 2026, trains from Colombo run again as far as Peradeniya and Gampola but not into Kandy station itself, so most visitors come by road.
