Highlights
- Snorkel or dive to see the marine life off Kalutara
- Look for colourful corals and reef fish
- A range of water sports is offered along the coast
Overview
Kalutara, about an hour south of Colombo, sits where the Kalu Ganga river meets the sea. Hotels and operators along the coast and the river offer water sports, from fast rides to slow paddles. Diving and snorkelling are possible offshore when the sea is calm.
Activities
- Jet skiing: on the river, lagoon or the sea near the shore, often with an instructor.
- Banana boats and tube rides: popular with groups and families.
- Kayaking and boat trips: on the Kalu Ganga, past mangroves, birds and riverside villages.
- Diving and snorkelling: dive centres run trips to reefs offshore, with fish, eels and sometimes turtles. Beginner courses and fun dives are offered.
When to go
The sea is calmest from about November to April. From May to October, the south-west monsoon brings rough seas, and diving usually stops. River activities can run for more of the year, depending on rain.
How long it takes
From a 15-minute jet ski ride to half a day for diving.
Getting there
Kalutara is on the coast road and railway, about an hour from Colombo. Most operators are linked to beach hotels or based near the river mouth.
Practical tips
- Choose operators that provide life jackets and a safety briefing.
- Agree on prices and duration first.
- Check the operator's dive certification and equipment.
- Avoid jet skis near swimmers.
