Anuradhapura is about four to five hours by road from Colombo, and about an hour and a half from Sigiriya and Dambulla. The ancient city is large, so allow a full day and start early to avoid the midday heat. Visitors to the sacred sites should wear white or light clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and remove shoes and hats; the ground can get hot, so socks help.

How to Get There

The Lakeside Hotel at Nuwarawewa is on the bund of the Nuwara Wewa reservoir in Anuradhapura. From Bandaranaike International Airport it is about 175 km by road, about 4 hours, travelling north through Kurunegala, or by the Puttalam road.

From central Colombo the journey is about 205 km and takes about 4 and a half hours.
