Overview

Jetavanaramaya is a huge brick stupa in the sacred city of Anuradhapura. It was begun by King Mahasena in the 3rd century AD and completed by his son. At its original height, estimated at about 122 metres, it was among the tallest structures in the ancient world. Today it stands at around 70 metres and is still one of the largest brick structures ever built.

What you see

The great dome of red-brown brick rises from a wide square terrace. Restoration has covered much of the dome, while parts show the original brickwork. Around the stupa are the ruins of the Jetavana monastery: image houses, monks' residences, carved guardstones and moonstones. A museum nearby displays finds from the site, including jewellery and carvings.

History

The monastery belonged to the Sagalika sect and was a rival to the older Mahavihara. It was abandoned after Anuradhapura fell in the 11th century, and the stupa was later overgrown by jungle before being restored in modern times.

How long it takes

About an hour, longer with the museum.

When to go

Early morning or late afternoon, when the terrace is cooler underfoot.

Getting there

The stupa is in the sacred city, close to the Ruwanwelisaya and Sri Maha Bodhi. Many visitors tour by bicycle or tuk-tuk.

Practical tips

  • A ticket for the archaeological sites is required; check current rates.
