Why stay here
It suits surfers, from beginners to the more experienced, and anyone who wants a relaxed beach base on the south coast. Weligama bay is wide and gentle, and evenings on the rooftop look out over the bay. Fishing boats still work from the beach, and the town itself has a small market and a few local restaurants worth trying. Mirissa, with its whale watching boats and busier nightlife, is a short tuk-tuk ride away, so it is easy to enjoy both.
Planning your stay
Weligama is about two hours from Colombo on the Southern Expressway. Its wide, gentle bay is one of the best places in the country to learn to surf, especially from about November to April. Surf schools and board hire are easy to find along the beach, and Mirissa's whale watching harbour is only a short drive away.

How to Get There
You will find Brizo Weligama on Weligama bay. The drive from Bandaranaike International Airport covers roughly 175 km and takes 2 hours 45 minutes or so, travelling via the Southern Expressway, leaving it for the coast near Weligama.
Coming from central Colombo instead, allow 2 hours 15 minutes for roughly 150 km.
The coastal railway from Colombo Fort also runs along this shore, a slower but scenic alternative if you travel light.
