Heritance Ahungalla in Ahungalle, Sri Lanka

Heritance Ahungalla

Heritance Ahungalla is a beach hotel about 75 km from Colombo, designed by Geoffrey Bawa, with minimalist interiors and open spaces looking out to the sea. Its infinity pool, also Bawa's design, seems to flow straight into the ocean, and is at its best at sunset.

Why stay here

It is one of Bawa's classic beach hotels, and a good choice for families and couples who want a full range of activities alongside the architecture. The coast around Ahungalla is quieter than Bentota or Hikkaduwa, yet both are an easy drive away, along with the Madu river, the turtle hatcheries and the Bawa brothers' gardens.

Planning your stay

Ahungalla is on the south west coast between Bentota and Hikkaduwa, about an hour and a half from Colombo by expressway. The sea is calmest from about November to April. Turtle hatcheries, the Madu river mangroves and the mask workshops of Ambalangoda are all within easy reach.

Things to do nearby

Take a Madu river safari, visit the Brief Garden of Bevis Bawa and Lunuganga, Geoffrey Bawa's country home, watch mask making in Ambalangoda, visit Galle Fort, or go whale watching in Mirissa.

How to Get There

You will find Heritance Ahungalla on the beach at Ahungalle, on the Galle Road between Bentota and Ambalangoda. The drive from Bandaranaike International Airport covers roughly 120 km and takes 2 hours 15 minutes or so, travelling via the Southern Expressway, then west to the Galle Road.

From central Colombo the journey is about 85 km and takes about 1 hour 30 minutes.

The coastal railway from Colombo Fort also runs along this shore, a slower but scenic alternative if you travel light.

Bubble Sri Lanka Holidays can arrange a private car with an English speaking chauffeur for your arrival and departure, or keep the same driver with you for the rest of your trip. Allow extra time at weekends and on public holidays, when the roads out of Colombo are busier.
