Overview

Coconut Tree Hill is a small headland at the eastern end of Mirissa, covered in tall coconut palms that lean out over the sea. It is one of the most photographed spots on the south coast, and for many visitors it is the reason to stop in Mirissa for an evening.

What you see and do

A short slope leads up to a grassy top, with rows of palms and the Indian Ocean on three sides. You can sit in the shade, watch the waves on the rocks below and take photos. There is nothing to buy on the hill itself, apart from the occasional coconut seller, and that simplicity is part of the charm.

Best time to go

Sunrise is quieter and often the best light for photos. Sunset is busier, especially in high season, when the top can be crowded. The south coast season, with calmer seas and clearer skies, runs from about November to April.

How long it takes

Thirty minutes to an hour.

Getting there

The hill is about 15 minutes' walk from the main Mirissa beach. Follow the beach east and climb the lane past the rocks, or take a tuk-tuk to the nearby road. Parts of the access are private land or guesthouse lanes; follow signs and stay on the path.

Practical tips

  • Wear shoes with grip; the slope is steep and sandy.
  • Stay away from the cliff edge, especially in wind.
  • Take your rubbish with you.
  • Drones may need permission; ask before flying.
