Highlights
- One of the most popular beaches on the south west coast
- A long stretch of sand facing the Indian Ocean
- Water sports from windsurfing to snorkelling
Overview
Bentota, on the south-west coast about 1.5 to 2 hours from Colombo, has one of the best-known resort beaches in Sri Lanka. A long strip of golden sand runs along the sea, and the Bentota river meets the ocean at the northern end, creating a sand spit with sea on one side and calm river on the other.
What it is like
The beach is wide and lined with palms and hotels, from small guesthouses to large resorts. It is quieter than some south-coast beaches, especially away from the resorts. Sunset walks along the sand are a highlight.
Swimming
From about November to April, the sea is usually calm enough to swim, though waves and currents can still be strong. From May to September, the south-west monsoon makes the sea rough and often unsafe. Swim where hotels mark safe areas and follow red flags.
Water sports
Bentota is a centre for water sports. On the river, you can try jet skiing, water skiing, banana boats, wakeboarding and windsurfing in calm water. Diving and snorkelling trips go to nearby reefs in season. Boat trips on the Bentota river take you through mangroves, with birds and monitor lizards.
How long it takes
A day or more; many visitors base themselves here for several nights.
When to go
November to April is best. Late afternoon for sunset.
Getting there
Bentota is on the coast road and the coastal railway, about 60 km south of Colombo, and also reachable by the Southern Expressway.
Practical tips
- Choose licensed water-sports operators with life jackets.
- Beware of touts offering trips at inflated prices.
