This part of the coast is close to the Madu river, the mask makers of Ambalangoda and the gardens of the Bawa brothers, so there is plenty to see within an hour. The beach in front of the hotel is wide and quiet, good for long walks at sunset.

Ahungalla is on the south west coast between Bentota and Hikkaduwa, about an hour and a half from Colombo by expressway. The sea is calmest from about November to April. Turtle hatcheries, the Madu river mangroves and the mask workshops of Ambalangoda are all within easy reach.

Take a madu river mangrove safari, hold baby turtles at a turtle hatchery, visit lunuganga and the brief garden, watch mask making in Ambalangoda, go whale watching in Mirissa, or walk the ramparts of Galle Fort.

How to Get There
Hotel Shinagawa Beach is on the beach at Balapitiya, south of Ahungalle. From Bandaranaike International Airport it is about 125 km by road, about 2 hours 15 minutes, travelling via the Southern Expressway, then west to the Galle Road.
Coming from central Colombo instead, allow 1 hour 45 minutes for roughly 90 km.
The coastal railway from Colombo Fort also runs along this shore, a slower but scenic alternative if you travel light.
To keep arrival simple, ask us for a private transfer with a chauffeur who meets you outside arrivals. You can keep the car for touring afterwards. Allow extra time at weekends and on public holidays, when the roads out of Colombo are busier.
