Why stay here

Talawakele is in the heart of tea country, with St Clair's and Devon falls close by, and is quieter than Nuwara Eliya town.

More about the area

Days here are slow: a walk through the tea, a cup of tea on the terrace, and a quiet evening meal. It is well placed for the drive or train between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, and makes a peaceful stop on the way to Horton Plains or Adam's Peak.

Planning your stay

Nuwara Eliya is in the hill country, about two and a half hours from Kandy and five to six hours from Colombo. At around 1,900 metres it is cool all year, and nights can be cold, so bring warm clothes. Nuwara Eliya is known as Little England for its colonial buildings, golf course and racecourse, and April is the busy holiday season for Sri Lankan visitors.

Things to do nearby

Visit a tea factory, see Dunsinane Falls, walk around Lake Gregory, see the Hakgala gardens, or hike to World’s End.

How to Get There

You will find The Waterfall Villas on a valley slope at Talawakele, about 30 km west of Nuwara Eliya. The drive from Bandaranaike International Airport covers roughly 150 km and takes 4 and a half hours or so, travelling either through Kandy and Ramboda or through Avissawella and Hatton, both climbing through tea estates for the last part.

From central Colombo the journey is about 140 km and takes about 4 hours 15 minutes.

As of October 2026 the hill country line is closed between Kandy and Nanu Oya after Cyclone Ditwah, so the trip from Colombo is by road. Trains do run between Nanu Oya, Ella and Badulla if you are coming from elsewhere in the hills.

To keep arrival simple, ask us for a private transfer with a chauffeur who meets you outside arrivals. You can keep the car for touring afterwards. Allow extra time at weekends and on public holidays, when the roads out of Colombo are busier.
