Highlights
- Set between the Dunsinane and Sheen tea estates
- Fed by a stream that joins the Kotmale Oya
- About 100 metres high
Overview
Dunsinane Falls flows between two tea estates, Dunsinane and Sheen, near Pundaluoya in the hills north-west of Nuwara Eliya. It is also called Pundalu Oya Falls, after the stream that feeds the Kotmale Oya. The total height is often given as about 100 metres.
What you see
The fall comes down in two parts. The upper section, around 30 metres, drops over a rocky ledge and is the part you can see clearly from the bridge and road. The lower section, around 70 metres, falls beyond the bridge and is mostly out of view. The setting is classic tea country: green slopes, line houses and pickers on the hillsides.
How long it takes
Twenty to thirty minutes at the viewpoint. It is best as a stop on a scenic drive rather than a trip on its own.
Getting there
From Nuwara Eliya, the route runs towards Ramboda and Kotmale and then on to Pundaluoya. The roads are narrow and winding, so allow about an hour and a half each way.
When to go
The fall is fullest during and after the monsoon rains. Mornings are usually clearer.
Practical tips
- Be careful near the bridge; traffic is light but the road is narrow.
- The estates are working farms and homes; ask before photographing people.
- Bring a jacket and rain gear.
Combine it with Ramboda Falls on the Kandy road or a tea factory visit. See things to do in Nuwara Eliya and Nuwara Eliya hotels.
