Highlights
- One of the prettiest falls in Sri Lanka, about 63 metres high
- Called Bridal Falls because its spray looks like a veil
- Local stories and history are tied to the falls
- A short and scenic walk leads to the viewpoint
Overview
Dunhinda Falls is a waterfall on the Badulu Oya river, a few kilometres north of Badulla town in the Uva Province. The name is often explained as "smoky" or "misty" falls, because of the spray that hangs in the air at the base. It is one of the best known waterfalls in the region and an easy outing from Ella.
What you see
The river drops over a cliff into a pool surrounded by rock and forest, sending up clouds of fine mist. Along the path, a smaller falls, sometimes called Kuda Dunhinda, can be seen. The viewing platform faces the main falls.
The walk
From the car park, a path of about 1 km runs through forest along the hillside, with steps up and down and shops selling drinks and snacks at the start. Allow around twenty to thirty minutes each way at an easy pace.
How long it takes
About one and a half hours in total.
When to go
The falls are fullest during and after rain. Uva gets its main rains with the north-east monsoon, around October to January, but there is usually water at other times. Mornings are quieter. Poya days and holidays bring local crowds.
Getting there
Dunhinda is about 5 km from Badulla, and around 45 minutes to an hour by road from Ella. A small entry fee is charged at the start of the path.
Practical tips
- The steps are slippery when wet; wear good shoes.
- Swimming at the base is dangerous and not allowed.
- Keep food away from monkeys.
