Overview
Ravana Falls is a waterfall beside the main road from Ella down to Wellawaya, a few kilometres below Ella town. Water cascades over several tiers of rock into a pool at the bottom. It is one of the most visited waterfalls in Sri Lanka because it is so easy to reach.
The legend
The falls are named after Ravana, the king of Lanka in the Ramayana. Local tradition says Ravana hid Sita in caves near the falls, and that she bathed in the pool. The nearby Ravana Cave is linked to the same story.
What you see
The falls are wide and dramatic in the rainy season and much thinner in dry spells. From the road and a viewing area, you can see the full cascade. Vendors sell snacks and fruit nearby, and monkeys are common.
How long it takes
Fifteen to thirty minutes.
When to go
The falls are fullest after rain, usually from about October to January. Mornings are quieter.
Getting there
The falls are about 6 km from Ella on the A23 road towards Wellawaya, a short drive or tuk-tuk ride. Buses between Ella and Wellawaya pass by.
Practical tips
- Climbing on the rocks is slippery and dangerous; people have been hurt here.
- Do not swim when the flow is strong.
- Keep food out of sight of monkeys.
