Kumana National Park, one of the things to do in Sri Lanka

Kumana National Park

Kumana, on the south-east coast beside Yala, is one of the most important bird areas in Sri Lanka. Its centre is the Kumana Villu, a mangrove swamp where water birds nest in large numbers around May and June.

Highlights

  • An important park for resident and migrant birds
  • See spoonbills, herons, pelicans and painted storks
  • Quieter than most national parks
  • Mangroves, lagoons and wetlands inside the park

Overview

Kumana sits on the south-east coast, next to the eastern edge of Yala, and is one of the most important bird areas in Sri Lanka. Around 255 bird species have been recorded here. Its centre is the Kumana Villu, a mangrove-fringed lagoon that fills with nesting water birds in season.

What you see

From about April to July, painted storks, spoonbills, herons, ibises and pelicans nest around the villu in large numbers. Away from the water, a safari can turn up elephants, crocodiles, wild boar, golden jackals and sometimes leopards. The park is much quieter than Yala, so sightings feel less rushed.

How a visit works

You enter at Okanda by jeep with a licensed driver. Most people do a morning drive of around four hours, which is the best time for birds. Read more about the Kumana safari and birdwatching in Kumana. From 1 October 2026 walkie-talkies are banned in tourist jeeps, so a good tracker matters.

When to go

April to July is best for nesting birds. The park is usually open all year, but it can close at short notice in the north-east monsoon, roughly November to January, when tracks flood. For about two weeks around July each year the entrance is busy with pilgrims walking to Kataragama.

Getting there

Arugam Bay is the usual base, about an hour by road to Okanda. Early starts are normal.

Practical tips

  • Bring binoculars and a long lens.
  • Pack water and a hat; there is little shade.
  • Check the park's status before you travel in the wet season.
