A view of Heritance Kandalama, a stay in Dambulla

Heritance Kandalama

Heritance Kandalama is a quiet retreat designed by Geoffrey Bawa, surrounded by wilderness and gardens and looking towards Sigiriya rock fortress. Its minimalist style is a true reflection of Bawa's architecture. It is in the heart of the Cultural Triangle, close to the Dambulla cave temple.

Why stay here

It is one of the best known buildings in Sri Lanka and worth staying in for the architecture alone. The hotel is built along a rock face and is covered in plants, so it seems to disappear into the forest, and monkeys and birds are regular visitors to the corridors.

Planning your stay

Dambulla is in the centre of the Cultural Triangle, about four hours from Colombo and about 30 minutes from Sigiriya. It is a good base for Sigiriya, the cave temple and safaris at Minneriya. Visit the cave temple early in the morning, before the heat and the tour groups, and dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered.

Things to do nearby

Visit the Dambulla cave temple and Sigiriya, try hot air ballooning, or take a safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla.
