Overview
Tuk-tuks, called three-wheelers in Sri Lanka, are the quickest and most fun way to get around Colombo. They weave through traffic, can stop almost anywhere and are cheaper than taxis. A tuk-tuk ride is also a good way to see the city on a short visit.
How to get one
- Apps: ride-hailing apps such as PickMe and Uber work in Colombo and show the fare in advance. This is the easiest way to avoid haggling.
- Metered tuk-tuks: many tuk-tuks have meters. Ask the driver to use the meter before you get in.
- Street hire: unmetered tuk-tuks are everywhere. Agree the price before you start.
Sightseeing by tuk-tuk
Many drivers offer half-day or full-day city tours. A typical route might take in Galle Face Green, the Fort and Pettah, Gangaramaya temple, Beira Lake, Independence Square and Viharamahadevi Park. Agree the route, the time and the total price in advance. Be wary of drivers who offer to take you to a "special" gem shop or sale; they often earn commission.
How long it takes
A short hop takes 10 to 20 minutes; a city tour, three to four hours.
When to go
Traffic is heaviest on weekday mornings and evenings. Late morning, early afternoon and weekends are easier.
Safety tips
- Hold on and keep bags inside; tuk-tuks have open sides.
- Keep phones secure.
- Carry small notes for fares.
