Overview
As Colombo's skyline has changed and the city has grown more cosmopolitan, cafes have opened all over town, mostly independent places and small local chains. Whether you want a good start to the day or a mid-day coffee, this list picks out cafes that stand out in some way: some for hearty comfort food, others for creative dishes, healthy or vegan food, sweet treats, a beautiful setting where you could happily spend the day, or simply the best cup of tea or coffee in town.
Note: this list was reviewed in 2026 against our earlier guide, but restaurants, cafes and shops in Colombo open, move and close often. Check that a place is still open, and its hours and prices, before you go.
Cafes in heritage and design settings
Paradise Road The Gallery Cafe
In the former office of the architect Geoffrey Bawa, the Gallery Cafe is a pleasure to look at, with elegant interiors that lead into a restaurant, cafe and cosy sitting areas. It serves comfort snacks, a tempting cake counter and some of the best coffee in town, all in calm and beautiful surroundings. A good stop after visiting the Geoffrey Bawa office. Price: high.
Barefoot Garden Cafe
In the garden of the Barefoot store, another building with Bawa influence, known for its bright, colourful handloom. The cafe serves generous Western cafe meals from a simple menu, plus vegan options, desserts, tea and coffee, in an attractive outdoor setting. It has long been known for live music, especially its jazz on Sundays. Price: mid to high.
Healthy and seasonal food
Cafe at the Villa Raha
One of our favourites. It serves healthy food based on superfoods, low in calories and high in nutrition, but full of flavour: matcha and berry smoothie bowls, breakfast waffles, eggs Benedict with a twist, creative juices and good coffee. All-day breakfast, vegan options and halal meat. Price: mid.
Cafe Kumbuk
A cafe in a restored old bungalow in a residential neighbourhood, with a menu that changes with the season and uses fresh local and organic produce. Food is healthy and simple, with vegan options and desserts, in a homely, relaxed setting with a yoga studio next door. Seasonal pop-ups add variety. Price: mid.
Cafe Nuga
Another health-focused cafe, notable because all its main dishes have vegan options. Besides smoothie bowls, it serves pasta, sandwiches, burgers and rice dishes, plus a children's menu, made with fresh and organic ingredients. It is in the central business district, with green walls and wooden furniture that bring a feel of the outdoors inside. Price: mid.
Long-standing favourites
The Commons
One of the oldest coffee houses in the city and still one of the most popular, with a young crowd who spend hours in its comfortable lounge. Its long menu includes well-known wraps and crepes, salads, sweet and savoury waffles, and Sri Lankan snacks such as kottu and stuffed rotis. Price: moderate.
The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Cinnamon Gardens
The international chain has many outlets around Colombo. Our earlier guide picked its branch on Maitland Crescent in Cinnamon Gardens for its spacious setting, free Wi-Fi, all-day food and its blended ice drinks, which have a following among young coffee drinkers. Price: mid.
Cake and sweets
The Butter Boutique
A small cafe that focuses on cake and coffee, with cookies, brownies and homemade granola to take away. Its cake counter is one of the best in the city, and its tres leches cake was a highlight in our earlier guide, as was its coffee. Price: moderate.
Caramel Pumpkin
A fun, quirky cafe with all-day dining, solid comfort food and good pasta in generous portions. Its menu is written with a cheeky sense of humour. Although it faces the road, the space is cool and relaxing. It also offers vegan options, halal meat, desserts and ice cream. Price: moderate.
Tea
The T-Lounge by Dilmah
At the Arcade, Independence Square, a restored colonial building, the T-Lounge is the place for tea lovers. Run by the Sri Lankan tea company Dilmah, it serves standard, flavoured and speciality teas and tea cocktails, along with snacks and light meals. A good place to taste different Ceylon teas. Price: moderate.
