The Bentota area, where our hotel picks are based

Hotels in Bentota

Bentota is the busiest resort on the south-west coast, with a wide beach, a river and a lagoon used for water sports. It is about an hour and a half from Colombo on the expressway. The hotels range from big resorts to small villas, and several have a link to Geoffrey Bawa, who lived and worked nearby.

Classic beach resorts

Avani Bentota was designed by Bawa, with inspiration from an 18th-century Dutch village, and has 75 rooms. Taj Bentota is a large five-star hotel on the beach. EKHO Surf runs along a kilometre of sand and is a good choice for families. Centara Ceysands sits on a strip of land between the sea and the Bentota river and is reached by a short boat ride.

Boutique and quiet

Saman Villas, perched on a rocky headland south of the centre, has suites with private pools and sea views. Taru Villas Rock Villa is a small boutique retreat in a 170-year-old walauwa. Pandanus Beach Resort is further south at Induruwa, on an isolated stretch of beach.

What to do

Water sports on the lagoon, a boat trip up the Madu or Bentota river, and a visit to Bawa's country estate at Lunuganga fill a few days easily. Go between about November and April for calm seas.
