Overview

Pigeon Island is a small marine national park off Nilaveli beach, north of Trincomalee. It is one of two marine national parks in Sri Lanka and the best-known place in the country for snorkelling. The park is named after the rock pigeons that breed there, and it is made up of a larger and a smaller island surrounded by coral reef.

What you see

In shallow water close to the beach you can see hard and soft corals, parrotfish, butterflyfish and many other reef fish. Young blacktip reef sharks are often seen near the shore, and green and hawksbill turtles visit the reef. On the far side of the main island, rocky areas drop into deeper water that suits divers.

Fees and boats

As of 2026, the official park fee is US$25 per foreign adult in the main season and US$20 at other times, with lower rates for children, plus taxes. The boat from Nilaveli is paid separately, and package prices from operators vary. Boats run in the morning, and trips to the island usually stop by early afternoon.

How long it takes

Most trips last two to three hours, including the short boat ride.

When to go

The calm season on the east coast is roughly May to September. Go early; the reef is quieter and the light better before the crowds and wind arrive.

Reef rules

  • Do not stand on, touch or collect coral.
  • Do not feed fish or chase sharks and turtles.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen, or wear a rash guard.
  • Litter and plastic are not allowed on the island.

Getting there

Nilaveli is about 30 minutes north of Trincomalee town. Boats leave from the beach near the park office.
