The Beruwela area, where our hotel picks are based

Hotels in Beruwela

Beruwela is a fishing town on the south-west coast, a little north of Bentota. Its beach is long and its three hotels on our list sit close together, so the choice comes down to style rather than location.

The hotels

The Eden Resort and Spa is a large five-star beachfront hotel with all the facilities you would expect, and works well for families. The Palms is a mid-range beach resort on the same stretch, with comfortable rooms and suites. Heritance Ayurveda Maha Gedara is different: it is a dedicated Ayurveda resort, where most guests come for a structured programme with consultations, treatments and a matching diet. It is not the place for a party, but it is one of the best-known Ayurveda hotels on the coast.

Around Beruwela

Early risers can watch the catch come in at the harbour and fish market. Bevis Bawa's Brief Garden is a short drive inland, and Bentota's water sports and his brother Geoffrey's Lunuganga estate are about 15 minutes south.

When to come

From about November to April the sea is calmer and the skies clearer. During the south-west monsoon, roughly May to September, expect rain and rough water, though Ayurveda programmes continue all year.

Booking an Ayurveda stay

Ayurveda programmes usually last at least a week, and many guests stay two or three. Treatments start with a consultation with the resort's doctor, and food is matched to your plan. Tell us about any medical conditions in advance so the resort can advise.
