The Negombo area, where our hotel picks are based

Hotels in Negombo

Negombo is the closest beach town to Bandaranaike International Airport, about 10 km or 20 to 30 minutes by road. That makes it the natural choice for your first or last night in Sri Lanka. The beach is long and wide, and the hotels line up along it north of the town.

Hotels in Negombo

On the main beach

Jetwing Blue is a 120-room beachfront hotel with a contemporary design and a long pool facing the sea. Heritance Negombo, a short way along, is a modern five-star hotel with an outdoor pool and spa. Goldi Sands Hotel is a four-star, better-value option on the same strip, with a pool and access to water sports.

Away from the strip

Arie Lagoon sits between the ocean and the lagoon, about half an hour from the airport, and is quieter than the main beach. Suriya Luxury Resorts is further north at Waikkal, a secluded five-star resort for those who want a proper rest rather than a transit stop.

Things to do

Even one afternoon is enough for the fish market and a boat ride on the Negombo lagoon and its mangroves. St Mary's Church and the old Dutch fort are in the town. The sea is best for swimming from about November to April.

Negombo or Colombo?

Choose Negombo if you land late, fly early or simply want a beach. Choose Colombo if you want restaurants, shopping and the city's sights; it is about 30 to 60 minutes from the airport.
