Overview
Lellama is Negombo's main fish market, at the northern end of the lagoon near the bridge to Duwa. It is one of the largest fish markets in Sri Lanka, and an early morning visit gives a close look at the town's fishing life.
What you see
Boats come in through the night and early morning. Fish, prawns, crabs and squid are unloaded, laid out on the floor and sold by noisy auction. Tuna, seer fish and sharks are among the bigger catches. Nearby, on the beach, fish are split, salted and dried in the sun on mats, a long-standing local industry.
When to go
Arrive around 5 to 6am, when the market is at its busiest. It quietens by late morning and is mostly over by noon. The market is closed on Sundays, as most of the fishing community is Catholic and goes to church. Fishing slows in rough weather, especially during the south-west monsoon.
How long it takes
About an hour, longer if you also visit the drying area.
Getting there
The market is near the lagoon mouth, a short tuk-tuk ride from Negombo beach hotels. It is around 20 to 30 minutes from the airport.
Practical tips
- Wear closed shoes you do not mind getting wet and dirty.
- Watch out for moving carts and baskets; stay out of the way of the work.
- Ask before taking close-up photos of people.
- Expect a strong smell, especially in the drying area.
