Overview

Mahamewna Uyana, or Mahamewna Park, was a royal pleasure garden of ancient Anuradhapura. The chronicles say it was laid out by King Mutasiva in the 3rd century BC. The name is usually explained as "great cloud", after a heavy shower that fell when the garden was founded, taken as a good sign.

Why it matters

Soon after Buddhism arrived in Sri Lanka, King Devanampiya Tissa gave this park to the monk Mahinda and the order of monks. It became the Mahavihara, the great monastery at the heart of Theravada Buddhism on the island. Many of the most sacred sites in Anuradhapura stand within the old park.

What you see

  • The Sri Maha Bodhi, the sacred fig tree grown from a branch of the tree in India under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.
  • The Ruwanwelisaya, the great white stupa built by King Dutugemunu.
  • Thuparamaya, said to be the first stupa built on the island after Buddhism arrived.
  • Ruins of monastery buildings, ponds and the bases of halls scattered through the area.

The Samadhi Buddha, a seated statue in meditation, lies a little further out in the old monastic area.

How long it takes

Half a day for the main sites on foot or by bicycle; a full day with the wider sacred city.

When to go

Early morning or late afternoon, as it is very hot at midday. Poya (full moon) days bring pilgrims in white and a special atmosphere, but larger crowds.

Getting there

The area is in the sacred city, a short tuk-tuk ride from Anuradhapura town hotels.

Practical tips

  • Wear white or light, modest clothes covering shoulders and knees.
  • Shoes and hats come off at sacred sites; bring socks for the hot ground.
  • A ticket for the ancient city covers the archaeological sites; check current prices.
