Where to stay in Wadduwa: a view of the area

Hotels in Wadduwa

Wadduwa is the first real beach stop south of Colombo, about an hour away by road. Its hotels sit along a quiet stretch of palm-lined coast with few shops or bars, which is exactly why people choose it. It suits a short break from the city, a first beach night after arriving, or a week of Ayurveda.

The hotels

The Blue Water is a five-star hotel originally designed by Geoffrey Bawa, with the open plan and long views that mark his work. Taprobana Wadduwa, next door, is a cheerful, colourful luxury hotel that works well for couples and families. Reef Villa and Spa is a small all-suite boutique hotel in a tropical garden with about 65 metres of beachfront and a colonial feel: four-poster beds, high ceilings and teak.

Siddhalepa Ayurveda Health Resort spreads over seven acres of trees and medicinal plants and is run by a long-established Ayurveda company; it offers treatment programmes as well as simple beach stays. Oak Ray Haridra Beach Resort is a smaller mid-range hotel on an uncrowded part of the beach.

Before you book

The west coast is at its best from about November to April. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rain and rough seas, and swimming is often unsafe. Kalutara, with its white dagoba, is a short drive south.
