Overview
Elephant Rock is a large rock headland a short way south of Arugam Bay, on Sri Lanka's east coast. It has two attractions: a gentle surf break that suits beginners, and a rock you can climb for wide views over the coast, especially at sunrise and sunset. The name comes from the rock's shape and from the wild elephants that sometimes graze in the scrub nearby.
The surf
The break is a right-hand point, with waves usually in the range of about 2 to 6 feet. The water is fairly shallow, and the waves are softer than at the main point, so it is popular with learners and surf schools. A mix of groundswell and windswell can arrive. Many mornings in season are offshore, giving clean waves. It works on most stages of the tide, but it can get crowded.
Season
The east coast surf season runs from about May to October. Waves are most consistent from around June to September.
The rock and beach
A short scramble up the sand dune and rock gives views up and down the coastline, over the bay, the beach and the scrub inland. The beach beside the rock is quiet and undeveloped.
How long it takes
An hour for the views; a few hours for a surf session.
When to go
Early morning, before the heat, crowds and wind; or late afternoon for sunset. Elephants are most likely to be seen around dawn and dusk.
Getting there
Elephant Rock is about 20 minutes by tuk-tuk or scooter from central Arugam Bay. The route leaves the main road south of town and follows sandy tracks; most tuk-tuk drivers know the way. Agree on the fare in advance.
Safety
- Go with others. Crocodiles live in the nearby lagoon and streams, and wild elephants move through the area.
- Keep a safe distance from any elephant and leave quietly if one approaches.
- Bring water and sun protection; there are no facilities.
