  • Waves of roughly 4 to 11 feet across several breaks
  • A lively beach town with plenty of places to stay

Overview

Hikkaduwa has been a surf town since the 1970s and is one of the best-known surf spots on Sri Lanka's south-west coast. It has a mix of reef and beach breaks within a short walk, so there are waves for beginners and experienced surfers alike.

The main breaks

  • Main Reef: lefts and rights over a reef in the centre of town. Busy, but consistent.
  • Benny's: a left-hand reef break that works better on bigger swells. For experienced surfers only.
  • North Jetty: a long left breaking near the harbour wall on the right swell.
  • Beach break: towards the southern end of the beach, over sand mixed with reef. Softer waves suit learners.

Wave size depends on the swell. Days of waist-high waves are common, with bigger sets when a good swell arrives.

When to go

The season runs from about November to April, when the south-west coast is dry and offshore winds are common in the morning. From May to October, the south-west monsoon brings rain, wind and messy seas. Early morning is usually best.

Lessons and rentals

Surf schools and shops along the beach rent boards by the hour or day and offer group and private lessons. Ask for a lesson on the beach break if you are new, and check the instructor's experience.

How long it takes

A lesson is about two hours. Most learners need a few sessions to feel steady.

Practical tips

  • Reef is shallow in places; wear booties if you are unsure.
  • Respect the line-up; locals surf here every day.
  • Turtles often feed near the reef; give them space.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen.

Getting there

Hikkaduwa is about 20 km north of Galle and roughly two hours from Colombo by road or train.
