Hikkaduwa, on the south-west coast, was one of Sri Lanka's first beach resorts and remains popular for surfing, diving, snorkelling and nightlife. A coral reef protected as a marine park lies close to the shore.
Top things to do in Hikkaduwa
Diving and snorkelling
The reef off the main beach has corals, reef fish and turtles, and dive centres visit wrecks and deeper reefs.
Surfing
Several breaks along the coast suit different levels, with board hire and lessons available.
Turtles
Green sea turtles often feed near the shore, and a turtle hatchery is nearby.
Street food
Try kottu, hoppers and seafood.
Nightlife
Beach bars and parties make Hikkaduwa one of the liveliest places on the coast.
Best time to go
The best weather and calmest seas are from about November to April.
How long to spend
Two to four nights.
Nearby
Galle Fort is about 30 minutes south. The Seenigama temple, on a rock island offshore, and the Tsunami Photo Museum at Telwatta remember the coast's history. Ambalangoda, known for carved masks, is about 15 minutes north.
Practical tips
Glass-bottom boats visit the reef, but do not stand on or touch the coral. Turtles near the beach should not be fed. Sea conditions change with the monsoon. Red flags, strong currents and rip tides are common from about May to September and lifeguards are few, so swim only where locals or hotel staff say it is safe.
Getting around
Tuk tuks are the easiest way to get around locally; agree the fare first or use a ride app where available. Buses and trains run along the coast road and railway between Colombo, Galle and Matara.
Best months for diving and surf
Dive centres operate mainly from about November to April, when visibility is best. Surf is usually good in the same season, with beginner waves on the main beach and stronger breaks for experienced surfers.
How long to spend
Two to four nights are enough for the reef, a surf lesson and a trip to Galle or Ambalangoda. Hikkaduwa is about two hours from Colombo by expressway or train.
Plan your visit
Hikkaduwa is about 30 minutes from Galle. For history, background and how to get there, see the Hikkaduwa travel guide, and for accommodation see hotels in Hikkaduwa.
