  • The mood is easy going and informal
  • Beach bars host parties that run late into the night
  • Music, the sea and a moonlit sky set the scene

Overview

Hikkaduwa has long been one of the liveliest beach towns in Sri Lanka after dark. Surfers and backpackers have come here since the 1970s, and the beach strip still has bars that play music late, with regular party nights in season.

What it is like

The scene is relaxed and informal. Expect beach bars with DJs, fire shows, sand under your feet and a mixed crowd of travellers and locals. Different bars host big nights on different days of the week, so the party moves around. Venues open, close and change names often, so ask your guesthouse or other travellers which places are busy now.

When to go

The main season is about November to April. Weekends and the Christmas and New Year period are busiest. Outside the season the town is much quieter. Nights usually get going after 10pm.

Know the rules

  • Alcohol is not sold on Poya (full moon) days, and many bars close or stay quiet.
  • Drugs carry severe penalties in Sri Lanka.
  • Do not swim after drinking or at night; currents are strong.

Practical tips

  • Agree tuk-tuk fares before you ride, or use a ride-hailing app.
  • Keep valuables at your hotel.
  • Dress is casual, but cover up when you leave the beach.

Getting there

Hikkaduwa is about 20 km north of Galle, and roughly two hours from Colombo by road or train.

By day, try surfing or snorkelling, and eat at the street food stalls. See things to do in Hikkaduwa and Hikkaduwa hotels.
