What to do

Surfing is best from about November to April, when the swell is clean and the sea calm enough for beginners on the inside breaks. Snorkelling and diving are possible over the reef and on nearby wrecks in the same months. Sea turtles are often seen feeding in the shallows. In the evenings, the beach bars are the main event.

Who it suits

Choose Hikkaduwa if you want a beach with life around it. If you prefer quiet, look south at Unawatuna or north at Ahungalle.

Getting there

The Southern Expressway gets you from Colombo in about two hours, and the coastal train stops in town. Galle Fort is about 30 minutes south by tuk-tuk, an easy half-day trip. Hikkaduwa's main beach is a short walk from all three hotels.

When to come

November to April is the season, with the clearest water for diving from about December to March. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rain and big, messy waves, and many dive shops close.
