Overview

Diyaluma Falls, near Koslanda on the road between Haputale and Wellawaya, is often listed as the second highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, at about 220 metres. Above the main drop, the Punagala Oya river flows over a series of natural rock pools before the edge. Hiking to these upper pools has become one of the most popular half-day trips from Ella.

The routes

From above (Poonagala road)

The easier route starts from the road towards Poonagala, above the falls. A faint path leads downhill through tall grass to the top of the main falls in about 30 minutes. Here, several rock pools lie close to the edge, where the water collects before plunging down. A further 15 minutes upstream brings you to the upper falls and more pools.

From the base (Koslanda)

The second route starts near the base of the falls, off the main road. It passes through a rubber estate and Koslanda village, where you may see latex collected from trees and rubber sheets hung to dry. A trail then climbs through grassland to the top. The path is unmarked in places, so a local guide is recommended. This route takes around one to one and a half hours up.

What you see

Clear pools for swimming, smooth rock slabs, small falls, and wide views across the lowlands towards the south. On clear days, the views extend a long way.

How long it takes

Allow three to four hours in total, including swimming.

When to go

Morning, before clouds and afternoon rain. Water levels vary: after heavy rain, currents near the edge become very dangerous. The drier months are safer for swimming.

Getting there

Diyaluma is about 1 to 1.5 hours by road from Ella, and about 45 minutes from Haputale. Tuk-tuks and drivers can drop you at either start point.

Safety

  • There are no railings or signs. Never go near the main edge.
  • Do not swim in pools close to the drop or when the water is high.
  • Wear shoes with grip; wet rock is very slippery.
  • Go with a guide or in a group.
