Highlights
- Goyambokka is a small sheltered bay framed by palm trees
- A peaceful place to spend time with family and friends
- Pallikaduwa is a string of rocky bays with unusual scenery
- Better for relaxing than swimming at most times
Overview
Goyambokka and Pallikaduwa are two small bays just west of Tangalle town. They are quieter than most beaches on the south coast and suit travellers who want sand, shade and a book more than nightlife.
Goyambokka
Goyambokka is a short curve of soft, fine sand lined with palms, with a few small cafes and guesthouses behind it. Sun loungers are often available if you buy a drink or food. It is a pleasant spot to spend a few hours, and sunsets here are popular.
Pallikaduwa
Pallikaduwa is a string of rocky inlets with patches of sand rather than one long beach. Several higher-end hotels sit above the coves, so it has a more private, upscale feel.
Is it safe to swim?
Often not. The sea along this stretch can have strong waves and currents, and there are usually no lifeguards. Ask locally each day, swim only in calm conditions close to shore, and stay out entirely when the sea is rough. Many visitors simply enjoy the beach and swim in hotel pools.
When to go
The south coast season runs from about November to April, when seas are calmer and skies clearer. From May to September the sea is rougher.
How long it takes
Half a day or more.
Getting there
Goyambokka is about a 10-minute tuk-tuk ride west of Tangalle town, down a side road from the main coast road.
Practical tips
- Bring cash for cafes and loungers.
- Shade is limited around midday.
