Overview

Ambuluwawa is a mountain beside the town of Gampola, about 20 km south of Kandy. Its summit now holds the Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex, opened in the late 2000s and promoted as Sri Lanka's first multi-religious centre and biodiversity park. The spiral white tower on top is visible for miles around and has become a popular landmark.

Gampola's history

Gampola was the capital of a Sinhala kingdom in the 14th century, under kings including Bhuvanekabahu IV. Several famous temples of that period, such as Gadaladeniya and Lankatilaka, are nearby.

What you see

  • Religious sites: a Buddhist temple and bodhi tree, a Hindu kovil, a mosque and a church, set together on the summit as a symbol of harmony. The bodhi tree is said to have been grown from a sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura.
  • The tower: a tall, cone-shaped stupa-like tower with a narrow spiral stairway winding around the outside to the top.
  • A standing Buddha statue, a replica of the footprint on Adam's Peak, and a viewing building.
  • The biodiversity area: forest and gardens on the slopes, with plants from different regions.

The views

From the top, on a clear day, you can see across the hills of the central province, Gampola town, the Mahaweli river, and peaks including Adam's Peak and the Knuckles range in the distance.

The climb

A road climbs most of the way, followed by a short walk to the summit. The final spiral stairway on the tower becomes very narrow and exposed near the top, with low railings. It is not suitable for people afraid of heights, and you can stop at any level.

How long it takes

About two hours, including the drive up.

When to go

Morning, for clearer views and fewer people. Weekends and holidays are busy. Avoid the tower in high wind or rain.

Getting there

Ambuluwawa is a short drive from Gampola town, about 45 minutes to an hour by road from Kandy. Tuk-tuks from Gampola go to the top.

Practical tips

  • An entry fee is charged; check current rates.
  • Shoes are removed in parts of the complex; dress modestly.
  • Bring a jacket; it can be windy and cool.
