  • Its name means Sita's Fort, where she is said to have stayed first
  • A key site in the Sri Lankan Ramayana story
  • Described in the legend as one of the loveliest places in Lanka

Overview

Seetha Kotuwa, meaning "Sita's fort", is one of the sites connected with the Ramayana in Sri Lanka. It is in the village area of Gurulupotha, in the hills on the road between Kandy and Mahiyangana. Local tradition says this is where Queen Mandodari's palace stood, and where Sita was kept before being moved to Ashok Vatika.

What you see

The area is forested and quiet. There is a limestone cave with stalactites and stalagmites, which has drawn archaeological interest. Remains above ground are modest: a pair of plain guard stones believed to date from the late Anuradhapura period, with some pillars and stone slabs, many of them half buried under soil and roots. Visitors come for the legend and the setting rather than for grand ruins.

The walk

Reaching the site involves a walk through forest. It is easiest on a dry day, when paths are less slippery. A local guide is strongly recommended, as the route is not clearly marked.

How long it takes

Allow two to three hours including the walk. As part of a Ramayana day from Kandy, plan a full day.

When to go

Dry mornings are best. Avoid heavy rain, when paths turn muddy and leeches come out.

Getting there

Gurulupotha is on the Kandy to Mahiyangana road, beyond Hunnasgiriya. It combines naturally with Weragantota, another Ramayana site near Mahiyangana.

Practical tips

  • Wear long trousers and good shoes.
  • Carry water and insect or leech repellent.
  • Respect any shrines and do not move stones.
