Highlights
- See colourful fish and corals off Mirissa
- Several dive sites lie within easy reach
- Try reef dives, night dives or deeper sites
Overview
Mirissa, on Sri Lanka's south coast, has a number of dive sites offshore, from shallow reefs to deeper rock formations. Dive centres in town run courses and trips. Snorkelling is possible at some spots close to the beach when the sea is calm.
What you see
Dive sites include rocky reefs and pinnacles with coral, sponges and sea fans. Common sightings include reef fish, moray eels, lionfish, octopus and, often, sea turtles. Some deeper sites are more suitable for experienced divers. Visibility varies with weather and season.
Snorkelling
Snorkellers can explore rocky areas near the ends of the bay, and boat trips take snorkellers to calmer spots. Turtles are sometimes seen in shallow water. Do not touch or feed them.
Courses and trips
Dive centres offer courses for beginners and certified divers, and fun dives for experienced ones. Book with operators that follow recognised safety standards and have well-kept equipment.
How long it takes
A dive trip usually takes half a day.
When to go
The season is about November to April. From May to October, the south-west monsoon brings rough seas, and most diving stops.
Getting there
Mirissa is on the south coast, about 45 minutes from Galle. Dive centres are along the main beach road.
Practical tips
- Use reef-safe sunscreen.
- Do not stand on coral.
- Leave at least 24 hours between diving and flying.
