Things to see and do in Mirissa: a view of the area

Things to do in Mirissa

Mirissa, on the south coast, is a palm-lined beach town and the main base for whale watching in Sri Lanka. Its harbour sends boats out each morning in season, and the bay offers swimming, surfing and snorkelling, with relaxed restaurants along the sand.

Top things to do in Mirissa

Whale and dolphin watching

From about November to April, boats look for blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins on the deep water off Dondra Head. Trips leave early and last several hours; choose a responsible operator.

Mirissa Beach

A curved beach with good swimming in season and sunsets over the bay.

Coconut Tree Hill

A headland of palm trees above the sea, one of the most photographed spots on the south coast.

Surfing

A reef break at the west end of the beach suits intermediate surfers; beginners can go to Weligama nearby.

Diving and snorkelling

Reefs and rocks offshore have turtles and reef fish in calm months.

Secret Beach

A small cove a short walk or tuk tuk ride from the main beach, quieter than the main bay.

Dondra Head Lighthouse

The lighthouse at Dondra, about 15 minutes east, marks the southernmost point of Sri Lanka and is one of the tallest in South Asia.

Best time to go

The best time is from about November to April, when the sea is calm and whale trips run. From about May to September, the south-west monsoon brings rough seas.

How long to spend

Two or three nights are enough for a whale trip, the beaches and a visit to Weligama or Galle.

Practical tips

Whale trips usually leave around 6 to 7 am and last four to five hours; take motion sickness tablets, sun protection and water. Choose operators who keep a respectful distance from the whales. Weligama, with gentle beginner surf, is about 15 minutes west, and Galle about 45 minutes. Sea conditions change with the monsoon. Red flags, strong currents and rip tides are common from about May to September and lifeguards are few, so swim only where locals or hotel staff say it is safe.

Getting around

Tuk tuks are the easiest way to get around locally; agree the fare first or use a ride app where available. Buses and trains run along the coast road and railway between Colombo, Galle and Matara.
