Highlights

- The water drops in three sections down the cliff
- Green hills and forest surround the falls
- A pool at the base is good for a cautious paddle
Overview
Ramboda Falls is a waterfall in the Ramboda area, on the main road between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. Water drops down several tiers of rock in a green, forested gorge. It is among the taller falls in Sri Lanka and an easy stop on the drive into the hill country.
What you see
From the road and nearby hotel terraces, you can see the upper falls tumbling over dark rock. A path leads down from the road to a viewpoint closer to the base, where the spray and noise are much stronger. Around the falls, tea estates cover the slopes, and the Kotmale reservoir lies below.
How long it takes
Fifteen minutes for a roadside view; about an hour if you walk down to the base and back.
When to go
The falls are fullest after rain, especially in the monsoon months. In dry spells, the flow is lighter but the path is safer. Morning light is good.
Getting there
Ramboda is on the A5 road, about an hour from Nuwara Eliya and around two hours from Kandy. Buses between the two towns pass by.
Practical tips
- The path to the base is steep and slippery; wear good shoes.
- Do not swim in pools above the falls.
- Combine with a stop at a tea factory along the road.
Nearby, see the Sri Baktha Hanuman temple, Kadadora and a tea factory. See things to do in Nuwara Eliya and Nuwara Eliya hotels.
