Overview
Sinharaja Forest Reserve is Sri Lanka's last large area of primary lowland rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Trails lead through tall forest, across clear streams and up to peaks with views over the canopy. Trekking here ranges from easy walks to long, demanding hikes. A licensed guide is required.
What to expect
Trails pass under tall trees, through ferns and over roots and rocks. Streams cross the paths, with pools where you can cool off. Birdlife is rich, and mixed-species feeding flocks are a highlight. Lizards, frogs, snakes, butterflies and purple-faced langurs are common. Weather changes fast: sunshine can turn to heavy rain in minutes.
Main trails
Mulawella
A short trail from the Kudawa side, about 2.4 km in total and a climb of around 300 metres, taking 1 to 2 hours. It is suitable for most fit walkers, and leads to a peak with views over the forest. The path is shaded, and mixed bird flocks are often seen along it.
Sinhagala
A long and demanding trek to the Sinhagala peak, deep in the reserve. The return trip is about 14 to 16 km and takes around 7 to 9 hours. It needs good fitness, an early start and a guide. The views from the top cover a sea of forest.
Other walks
Shorter trails lead to waterfalls such as Kekuna Ella and Brahmana Ella, and along nature trails near the entrances.
Entrances
- Kudawa: the north-western entrance, near the Kudawa Conservation Centre, reached via Kalawana.
- Pitadeniya and Deniyaya: the southern side, reached from Matara or Galle.
When to go
December to April is often driest, with August and September also good. Avoid the heaviest monsoon months, around May to June and October to November, when trails can flood.
How long it takes
From a 2-hour walk to a full day.
What to bring
- Rain jacket, quick-dry clothes and hiking shoes.
- Leech socks; leeches are common.
- Plenty of water and snacks. Do not drink stream water without treating it.
