Beruwala, about 55 km south of Colombo, is thought to be one of the earliest Muslim settlements in Sri Lanka, linked to Arab traders. It has a long resort beach, a busy harbour and a gem trading area.
Top things to do in Beruwala
Beruwela Beach
A long beach lined with resorts, calm from about November to April.

Colourful boats unload their catch in the early morning.

Best time to go
The best weather on this coast is from about November to April. The south-west monsoon brings rain and rough seas from about May to September.
History
Beruwala was known to early European sailors as Barberyn, a name still used for the lighthouse on a small island off the harbour. The Kande Viharaya at Aluthgama has a very large seated Buddha.
Getting around
Tuk tuks are the easiest way to get around locally; agree the fare first or use a ride app where available. Buses and trains run along the coast road and railway between Colombo, Galle and Matara.
Safety
Sea conditions change with the monsoon. Red flags, strong currents and rip tides are common from about May to September and lifeguards are few, so swim only where locals or hotel staff say it is safe.
Plan your visit
Bentota is just south. For history, background and how to get there, see the Beruwala travel guide, and for accommodation see hotels in Beruwala.
