Minneriya National Park, between Habarana and Polonnaruwa, is known for the gathering, when large numbers of elephants graze around the ancient Minneriya tank in the dry season. It is often described as one of the largest seasonal gatherings of Asian elephants anywhere. The tank is traditionally credited to King Mahasena in the 3rd century AD.
Top things to do in Minneriya
Elephant safari
Afternoon jeep safaris reach the grassy shores of the tank, where herds gather to graze and drink. From about July to September or October the numbers can be very large.
Birds
The tank attracts spot-billed pelicans, painted storks, cormorants and lesser adjutants, along with endemic birds such as the Sri Lanka junglefowl.
Other wildlife
Sambar and spotted deer, purple-faced langurs and toque macaques are common; leopards and sloth bears are present but rarely seen.
Nearby sights
Minneriya combines easily with Polonnaruwa's ruins in the morning or a climb of Sigiriya.
Best time to go
The gathering is usually best from about July to October. Elephants can be seen at other times, in smaller groups, and drivers may switch to Kaudulla or Hurulu.
Safari tips
Jeep safaris are usually booked through lodges or drivers; park fees are paid at the gate on top of the jeep hire. Morning and late afternoon drives are best. Bring binoculars, a hat and water, and stay in the vehicle. Ask your driver to keep a respectful distance from the herds.
